Ishka is an absolutely GORGEOUS girl (as you can see from her pictures)!!! There's NO doubt that this 6-7 year old female was much-loved in her previous home. But, since she prefers to not be around young children, when her previous owner married a man who had 2 young kids and then they had a baby together, the previous owner reluctantly gave Ishka up knowing that she'd be happier in a different home. Ishka needed some time to acclimate to a new environment & new people; that's not surprising, considering she was reeling from losing her home & was quite unsure as to why she suddenly found herself in totally new surroundings. Her foster mom has let Ishka decide what she is/isn't comfortable with re: being close, getting petted, etc. At first she was stand offish, but as she got to know us a bit more & as she learned the routine from the other dogs at her foster home and had a chance to get settled into the daily rhythm there, she has gotten more comfortable. Not only does Ishka know the basic commands, her vocabulary goes well beyond just your basic "sit" command. She is not good with other female dogs, but is okay with most male dogs; she can get bossy and demanding to other dogs, especially when she wants to play, so she will do best as either an only dog or paired with a confident male who won't feel bullied if Ishka starts demanding that he play with her now. She is easily redirected when she does get too bossy, so is best-suited to a dog-savvy owner who will help her properly channel her energies. She is smart & learns quickly, so there's no telling how many tricks she could learn, or she might even be a good prospect for rally, obedience, agility, etc. if someone was willing to invest the time in teaching her. Ishka is spayed, utd, and heartworm negative. She is house trained, obedience trained, and crate trained. She is not good with kids, is ok with most male dogs but can overwhelm some that are "softer", unknown with cats. She rides wonderfully in the car. She needs some work on leash manners, but given all her other training, she may have just been excited when she came to us -- even if not, she is smart and will learn quickly. 12-14-14 Since the above was written we have discovered that even a dominant and confident male dog is no match for Ishka, she must be in a home where she is the only dog.
